Mark Twain said it all: "Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius." Thanks to AirAsia, we can now all travel affordably from Singapore to one of the most beautiful islands in the world. If you haven't already known, AirAsia launched its inaugural flight to Mauritius in October 2016. With AirAsia's amazing promotional airfares, I decided to treat my family to a tropical getaway for a week in December - best decision ever.
The weather was perfect in mid December and the peak season was just getting started. Driving around Mauritius is easy and we rented our car from Pingouin upon our arrival. For the first 2 days, we stayed with Otentic Eco Tent - the first and only eco safari tent lodge in Mauritius. It was our first glamping experience aaand we loved it! The people at Otentic are really friendly and always ready to help, breakfast is awesome (you have an array of fruits, cereals, eggs, bread and juices) and they serve reeaally delish Mauritian food for lunch too! (No problem at all if you are a vegetarian like me!) In our tent, we had a double bed, and two single beds - perfect for us! Plus, each tent comes with its own private bathroom with hot shower.
When you stay with Otentic Eco Tent, they actually provide a free boat shuttle to Ile Aux Cerfs every morning. Ile Aux Cerfs is a small piece of beach paradise off the east coast of Mauritius and is definitely a must-go!!! It's one of the most picturesque beaches I have ever seen in my life - white sandy beaches with the clearest waters... you'd fall in love with this place in seconds! Be sure to bring along your mask and snorkel (you can also borrow them from Otentic), because there are quite a few fishes and sea urchins you can easily see at the island.
Otentic is actually also situated just a few paddles away from Grande River South East waterfall - one of the most visited waterfalls in Mauritius. And of course, Otentic provides free kayaks for their guests. The best time to paddle out as advised would be in the late afternoon after 5pm because that's when all the tourist boats have left and you can enjoy a not-so-choppy and quiet ride out to the waterfall.
One last activity that you should not miss out on is to trek up a hill just at the back of Otentic because the views are just breathtaking... Plus it's not touristic at all, the only few people we passed by were other guests from Otentic or the local farmers.
We truly enjoyed our stay with Otentic Eco Tent, and will be back for sure ;)
